Koalas in the southern parts of Australia are considerably larger and have thicker fur than those in the north. This is thought to be an adaptation to keep them warm in the colder southern winters.
The reverse of the coin depicts an adult koala sleeping in a eucalyptus tree surrounded by gumnuts, gum leaves and gum blossoms. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2017 year-date.
To capture the depth and detail of the design, the coin is struck in high relief to a rimless format and features an antique finish. This coin has been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment, the appearance of each coin may vary. Each coin is presented in a classic grey display case, within a stylised shipper, and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
